How we see children
Gladwyne Montessori has been guided by Dr. Maria Montessori's research-based curriculum for over sixty years. An authentic delivery of that curriculum gives each child an individualized learning experience. Children build depth of knowledge and the values they need to be actively engaged global citizens. Curiosity leads; teachers guide students through the full curriculum.
In the rooms, children work with concrete materials in mixed-age classrooms, moving from novice to practicer to mentor. Teachers guide rather than direct. Small groups gather for lessons, then children return to work they choose within the full curriculum. Through 6th grade, the curriculum adapts and deepens to prepare students for the transition to middle school, and the program includes Physical Education, Music, Library, Spanish Language Instruction, Art, and Makerspace as of 2024.
What you notice in practice
Teachers work at a child's eye level and follow the child. In mixed-age classrooms, children move from novice to practicer to mentor. Teachers guide students through the full curriculum, in small groups.
Rooms hold concrete materials children can handle. Work happens in an uninterrupted cycle, so a child stays with a task. Recess and lunch break the middle of the day. The afternoon brings more work before dismissal.
How we work with families
Families ask questions at pickup and drop-off, and teachers answer them there. The school also lists contacts for admissions and enrollment, student services, billing and tuition assistance, and the Head of School. Parents can reach the right person directly rather than waiting.
New children settle in gradually. Teachers watch how a child separates from a parent, how they enter play, and what comforts them, then adjust the pace of the first weeks. Families can ask about the specific settling-in schedule and what to expect at drop-off. Over sixty years, the school has learned to make those first days steady for both child and parent.
